Sometimes the most beautiful souls are the most broken.

Protect.

From the minute I met her, I wanted to offer my protection.

Desire.

I wanted her to be mine but didn’t have anything of value to offer. Just my jaded heart, broken soul, and undying love.

Sacrifice.

I gave up my pride, my hostility, and my heart to make her happy.

Justice.

Fuck the consequences, I would’ve given up anything, even my life, to keep her safe.

Tragic.

Both our lives were soaked in tragedy from day one.

Reckless.

I ignored the people who warned me he was dead inside.

Truth.

Everyone said he was bad, violent, and would drag me down.

They were wrong. He was as broken as I was.

Strength.

Together, we’d heal our hearts and stitch together our souls.

I really enjoyed this for what it was - a novella. But, being a huge fan of Autumn Jones Lake and knowing what she's capable of when giving a full length story (some of which span multiple books) I couldn't help but feel a little short-changed here.

I did enjoy the story and the characters, but what can I say...I'm greedy.

"You're already the center of my world."

Cards of Love: Knight of Swords is a sweet and tender romance novella that encompasses the full spectrum of emotions. It is an EPIC story of two young lovers who find the strength to overcome the darkness and find long-lasting love together. Roman has spent his entire seventeen years of life bouncing from foster home to foster home. He is no stranger to abandonment, abuse, and neglect. Just a few months shy of turning eighteen, he is moved to a final group home. Although the circumstances seem to be more of the same, he is pleasantly surprised to meet a young spunky girl named Juliet. Juliet and Roman become fast friends and it doesn't take long for sparks to fly between the two. Juliet, also orphaned, lives with her aunt and uncle. Both Roman and Juliet find love in each other as they have never experienced before. As life continues to weigh down on them both, these young lovers will do whatever it takes to create a future together.

"And you're mine."
Told in multiple POV, Cards of Love: Knight of Swords is a beautiful coming of age romance story that will inspire and captivate you with each and every turn of the page. With a complex plot and well developed supporting characters, Autumn Jones Lake offers a fresh and unique glimpse into young love. In addition to the adoration I feel for both of the main characters, I was pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorite LOKI characters grace the pages. The tempo of the writing is perfectly paced and as always the underlying themes of friendship, loyalty, and love play a prominent role in this read.
Overall, I highly recommend anything and everything written by Autumn Jones Lake. She is an exquisite storyteller who never fails to amaze me with her fantastic characters and exquisite storytelling. When Ms. Lake is writing, my KINDLE and I are waiting. I look forward to more greatness from Autumn. Lucky for me her next book is coming out soon!

Beyond 5 Roman and Juliet Stars

I thought I would love this book - partly because Ms Jones Lake has yet to write something that I haven't devoured every page of and partly because the synopsis had me from the first line:

Sometimes the most beautiful souls are the most broken

Roman is seventeen years old and has been in the foster care system since he was seven. He has been moved from pillar to post and has learnt the hard way how to keep himself protected and safe in a cruel and tough world. Starting a new school he meets Juliet. She lives with her (less than stellar) aunt and uncle and has done since her mother died when Juliet was young. The connection between these two is immediate. They truly are soul mates and their bond is pretty much unbreakable.

"I made up my mind right then and there. I was going to marry this girl."

Life has dealt both of these young people a cruel hand but they are resilient and between them they battle to survive.

For as much as there are people who set out to harm these two, there are brilliantly written secondary heroes in this book that step up to help Roman and Juliet. Some of those heroes wear leathers and ride Harley's - Dex from Autumn's Lost Kings MC Series is related to Juliet and he steps in with some other familiar faces....I LOVED catching up with my LOKI men.

The story is well paced. I cried in places because my heart ached for both of them but especially Roman.

"My world was too dark and chaotic for love to develop"

You need to bear in mind that these are young characters and the story is written in a way that is respectful of that. It is passionate albeit in a sweet and soul deep way. The build up to them being physically intimate is intense - this author is excellent at writing that - and worth waiting for.

This is easily read as a standalone but if you are familiar with LOKI, then this book is truly Kindle Catnip.

HEA? Yes - gorgeous!!!
Cheating? No way - these two are completely about each other. Truly soul mates.

"You're my present. My future. When we're together, I'm something and I'm nothing when we're apart."

#RealTalk: I really had no clue what to expect from this story when I first heard about it. I’m not the greatest at reading blurbs and teasers from #goto authors but at the same time, I knew it would be a short/novella type story, so I figured at best it would be an extended moment in time kind of thing, maybe. What I got was exponentially more!!

THESE.TWO.KIDS. *infinite hearts, I say*

Okay, so if you’re an Autumn fan and keep up with her LOKI series then you might have already spied these two as grown-ups. This is their story getting there …. And what an epically beautiful story it was! *infinite hearts, I say*

“Juliet, the day I met you, I knew I was gonna marry you.” … I mean … *infinite hearts, I say* !!!

Roman and Juliet are kismet. I felt it before it was even on the page. Autumn did that with her word wizardry. She always does! This woman is exceptionally good at this craft. I have sung her praises for years and she is well deserving of them. She didn’t write a fluff piece, but she didn’t bog us down with its darkness either. She walked the very thin line between dark and light with this journey but made damn sure you felt all Roman and Juliet’s history! And there is some serious history with these two. Broken souls you might even say, but when they met you could feel the force of their hearts as one glue those broken pieces together. It was a thing a beauty reading this book. I cannot emphasize that enough.

I’m not giving you a play by play of any of it because it just wouldn’t be fair. I even hope most of you don’t read too many reviews before you jump in. Just one-click and enjoy the ride! This story made my #2018TopReads list and truth be told, it's in the top three! (do with that information what you will LOL)

"Everyone's a little broken, don't you think? Around you I feel whole"

Fifty chapters, and they flew by. I love Autumn Jones lake's MC series and couldn't wait to see what she had written for the cards of love collection and Ile be honest with it being a collection of books by different authors I expected something like a sample of her writing, a novella type read like you get in anthologies.

What I got was an absolutely breathtaking journey of young love with hopes and dreams.

Roman and Juliet are two 17 year old's who have already suffered enough hardship and heartache in their life. Juliet is in the care of her Uncle and aunt after losing her parents and Roman has been passed around from one foster home to another.

Romans first day at school turns out to also be the first day of a new life with new beginnings, hopes and promises when he meets Juliet and is instantly infatuated with her.

"I loved the way her name felt rolling off my tongue.
She didn't jerk her hand away, and held my gaze.
I made up my mind right then and there.
I was going to marry this girl".

Knight of swords is a journey from teenage life and love into adulthood and all the ups and downs they face together, it also tells of how Roman ventured into the MC world but it isn't an MC read. Knight Of swords is the story of two teenagers who find each other when they needed someone in their lives to love and care for them even if they didn't know it at the time.

Together, we'd heal our heart's and stitch together our souls.

I was completely captivate by Roman and Juliet's story, I really like the journey with these kind of books, teenagers who fall in love and venture into adult life together.

Not only did Autumn Jones lake give me a new favourite couple but she exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be reading more books in this collection by different authors.

Told in first person dual pov and leads to a hea. Can be read as a standalone.

"Everyone's a little broken, don't you think?"

I agree that everyone is a little broken, but these two were more than a little broken. They'd been chewed up and spit out before they were even adults. Life had kicked them hard and they were just trying to survive. Their expectations were very low until they found each other. And once they did, they were afraid to hope for more... but they did.

I confess, I wasn't expecting much from this story with it being part of a multi-author project. I knew I would like it, because, Autumn Jones Lake. But, I wasn't prepared to have it affect me as deeply as it did. This story touched my soul. The pain these two teenagers had already endured. The unfairness of the life they had been subjected to. I was enraged by the injustice and ready to grab a shovel and offer my assistance to whoever had the balls to fix the problem. Yeah, I guess you could call me a 1% reader. 😉

I loved this beautiful story, hard. Knowing the timeframe was before Slow Burn (Lost Kings MC, #1), when I finally turned the last page I was tempted to keep going and start reading the Lost Kings MC series all over again from the beginning. It's one of my favorites and Knight of Swords only reinforced that belief...sigh. I'm not sure what direction the author will go with her next release, but this fangirl will be ready and willing. The line forms here...

Knight of Swords is an excellent novella and prequel to the Lost Kings MC series. Roman and Juliet's story was beautiful and I loved their characters so much. I went through a lot of emotions while reading as their road to an HEA was not an easy one. They met while in high school, their home lives were less than desirable which they bonded over and at the same time, they developed an unbreakable connection and relationship. Their story was quite addictive and with every page, I wanted more and more.

I hadn't read the Lost Kings MC series prior to reading Knight of Swords and I loved this book so much that I will definitely be reading that series. Knight of Swords is a definite must read!!

This installment of the Cards of Love series was a wonderful and inspirational story about young love. Roman and Juliet know first hand that life isn’t easy. Yet, they do what they can to make it better and after meeting on Roman’s first day of school they become inseparable.

An instant connection and close friendship slowly builds into something much more stronger and no matter what happens to try to keep them apart, they always find their way back to each other.

Roman could have turned out so much different than he did from the life he was dealt, but he somehow managed To hold onto his dreams of making a better life for himself. He still had some hope of things getting better and dreaming of a life with Juliet fueled that hope. They didn’t need lots of money or expensive things. They would both be happy to just be together and life life on their terms.

This story was quite inspirational. I’ve read a few of the Lost Kings MC novels but I’m not familiar with the older versions of these characters, so I can firmly state that this story is fully enjoyable if you’ve read all of the series, some of the series or none of the series.

Heartfelt, quick Novella with the perfect blend of unique passion and drama this author is famously known for executing perfectly!
The story of Roman and Juliett is a young lovers “instalove” romance. Both grew up under terrible circumstances so they were pretty sure what they wanted and when.
The story unfolds nicely and it served as a prequel to the Lost Kings MC series. Background information is offered regarding certain characters, so that if you’re familiar with the series you gain more insight about them and their story. If you’re not familiar with the Lost Kings MC series, then this book serves as a nice introduction to prompt you to read it.

Cards of Love: Knight of Swords is part of a massive multi-author project, a series of love letters to the mysterious and inspirational world of tarot cards. These can be read in any order, as the only thing the Cards of Love books share is their common inspiration from the world of tarot.

Each book is a standalone love story with its own characters and it’s own unique story.

Roman and Juliet met when they were about seventeen in high school. Both having had traumatic childhoods they bonded straight away, but it was more than that simple thing that tied them, a lot more.

As a prequel to the Lost Kings MC it explains some of the basic background well. As far as Roman and Juliet go it makes you fall in love with them both, they are both such genuinely lovely characters. Pip is worth a mention too, such a sweetheart. Likewise the less desirable characters are painted very clearly too and it’s easy to picture them in their nasty mannerisms and selfish ways.

When the drama and action take place in each scene that they do, the author has a smooth way of executing these situations without huge fuss and it really adds to the story. You definitely go through the emotions with the characters, especially the feelings of injustice, anger and worry but also joy, happiness and delight.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella.

This is only the second book I have read by this author and it was a really good read. From what I can tell this is a prequel to her Lost Kings MC series and it has left me wanting so much more from these characters and the series in general.

Roman and Juliet were both from a background that was less than desirable but they coped with their lots and helped each other, causing, in my opinion, an unbreakable bond. And as this book unfolds you find out the characters you can trust and who is a little shady, to say the least.

This book has it all, the action is crazy, violent and cruel. But what I get from this book more than ever is a sense of loyalty, love and a never-ending love. Roman and Juliet and two characters I think will stay with me for some time.

This book is a huge recommend from especially as I have had fresh eyes and have never encountered these characters before. Looks like I am off to read the Lost Kings MC.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This story was fascinating, intriguing, and engaging with lots of passion that is off-the-chart hot! This story held my attention, was entertaining and humorous at times, but it will keep you glued to the pages of this captivating story. This is the first time I read a book by Autumn Jones Lake, but I assure you, it will not be the last. Juliet Hayworth lives with her aunt and uncle after her parents died. Roman Hawkins is tall, handsome, smart, and sexy and he is living in a group home after years of being in foster homes after his mother died—both Roman and Juliet are products of tragic childhoods. Roman and Juliet met in high school. At the ages of seventeen, Roman fell in love with Juliet the first time he met her. He vowed to himself that he would protect her, sacrifice everything—even his heart for her, his desire and undying love, and he would do anything regardless of the consequences to keep Juliet safe. Although Roman sometimes was brash and very temperamental, but he also had a soft side when it came to Juliet. THE CARDS OF LOVE: KNIGHT OF SWORDS was everything I hoped it would be—emotional, angsty, intriguing, and beguiling from the beginning until the end. There are several twists and turns within the story that makes it interesting. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. The book will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end.

This series … I love it so much! So many different authors, different tropes, each story a total standalone. I have discovered more new to me authors through this series than I did otherwise the whole year. Autumn Jones Lake was one of those new discoveries as well. Her contribution is an inspirational story about young love and a prequel to her Lost Kings MC series.

Roman and Juliet have not been dealt an easy life. Yet they are making the best of it, especially Roman turning out to be a much more decent human being than he could have been with his background. He always held onto his dreams, wanting to make a better life for himself. Part of that is thanks to Juliet, who he meets at his first day of school and forms an instant and inseparable connection with…

Their story is full of action and deception, violence and loyalty – but, above all, an insta-attraction, insta-bond birthing a love that conquers it all. That insta-feeling was a bit too much for me, same as the pages to describe their connection, let it grow were a bit too few. It made everything seem a bit rushed, no matter how much these two felt as the other’s destiny.

A tragical and fast-paced emotional love story of a modern day Romeo and Juliet.

This book was a quick easy read. It is about Roman and Juliet who experienced love at first site. They are both orphans and feel unwanted although Juliet does live with her aunt. Her aunt doesn’t pay much attention to her and a Roman gets bounced a lot from foster home to foster home. They both don’t expect much out of life but they hope for something better. They became everything to each other. They were soulmates.

unnamed.gif

I don’t usually like to read books where it’s insta-love (I’m more of a slow burn gal) but in this books case I found the characters quite endearing. I may have found their romanced rushed but when you know, you know. They knew they were linked forever and nothing would severe their bond.

If you are looking for a book where the couple plan their future from the get go, then this book is definitely for you.

A world of chaotic darkness was his life, roses and rainstorms far from his mind.

Another new school, a locker assignment and lightning bolts made all the difference and his fate was sealed.

Hearts full of loss, hurt and a need to be wanted.

Instant attraction, mirrored feelings and a strong desire to protect and defend.

Life is a battle, a dance around danger, can this ever change?

A sad yet beautiful read. I couldn't put this down as my heart filled with thoughts of Roman and Juliet.

Daisies in the wind may be what she loves, but they remind me of the two main characters. Easy to abuse or trample but left alone they flourish.

Juliet the loner, her true beauty unseen by all but him.

Roman so loyal and fierce, yet kind and caring.

I don't know who stole my heart first, but I do know they both ended up sharing it.

This is a story to be chosen and treasured. Read time and time again. I seriously think it's a contender to replace Twilight as a favourite young adult read.

Emotional and inspiring, a story that will swim in your heart and mind long after you put it down.

Knight of Swords had me hooked from the first page, this is a beautiful love story; the journey of Roman and Juliet.

Roman has bounced from different foster families and group homes his whole life, when he meets Juliet he knows that he has found his forever home with her. Juliet has lived with her Aunt and Uncle since her mother passed away, feeling trapped under their roof she spends as much time with Roman as possible. Together they have a plan for their future and with some help they make their dreams a reality.

Autumn absolutely slays this book, I fell in love with Roman and Juliet. It was great to have an appearance by some other characters from the Lost Kings series showing a side to Dex that we have never seen before.

I personally loved this book, it’s was brilliant and tugged on all my heartstrings throughout. If you haven’t read the Lost Kings series I highly recommend you keep going, this book takes place before book 1 in the series so there are no spoilers. I really hope to hear more from Roman and Juliet in future.

" Sometimes the most beautiful souls are the most broken. "
Cards of Love is a multi author project, organized by Willow Winters. Knight of Swords by Autumn Jones Lake is a standalone, set in her Lost Kings MC Series. Every book in this project can be read in every order.

Meet Roman Hawkins, he's an outsider from the wrong side of the tracks and what he wants is age out of the system and be on his own. He lies low to avoid trouble, but when he mmets Juliet on his first day of school, everything is about to change.
Juliet is a good girl. She's living with her aunt and uncle and is biding her time till she can leave for college. But Roman and fate have other plans-
They're " two lonely damaged spirits mended together.... and become one. "
Knight of Swords is a touching story that will stay with you. I read the book a few days ago and I can't get Roman and Juliet out of my head. They're stubbornly staying. I liked the writing-it's great, the story and the characters and give 4,5 stars.

Knight of Swords was my first Autumn Jones Lake novel and I loved it. This insta-love young adult novel had me hooked from page one right until the end. The chemistry between Roman and Juliet was so intense, even at that young age you just knew they were meant to be together. These characters were flawed yet well-developed and their story will evoke a range of emotions from you. Both from a less than desirable background, these two loved each other with a single minded focus and inspite of any ups and downs that focus never shifted. Apart from romance, there was some drama and angst in the story which all helped to keep you glued to the pages. I absolutely loved this page-turner.
It was a great introduction to this author's work and has left me curious about her other books. This installation in the Cards of Love series was a great read and I would recommend it to all lovers of young adult romance.

Night of Swords has to be one of my favorite books that Autumn has ever written. It's such a beautiful, tender and romantic love story of two lost people who found their north star in each other.
I fell in love with both Juliet and Roman. Their stories were so heartbreaking but together they where magic. Two souls lost and unwanted in the world finally found the love and the acceptance they have longed for.

Juliet and Roman were surrounded with so much abuse and darkness, but their love and friendship was the light they needed to make it through. I loved seeing their relationship progress from friendship to love.

Beautiful book!

Oh I loved Roman and Juliet’s story! We got a peek at them in After Burn and they had me intrigued. Getting to read about how they came to be together and friends with the Club was both thrilling and heartbreaking. They had such hard lives but were able to find each other in the midst of it all. They were both such good people who got dealt a crappy hand in life but were able to retain their kind and loving souls and move forward positively in life. This was such a beautiful and emotional story and I hope we see more of them in the future.

5 STAR Review by Jodi for Ruby Red Romance Review

I loved every minute to this sweet, sexy, instalove story. This might be one of my favorite Cards Of Love books. Roman and Juliet are no strangers to a hard life. These two started out as amazing friends. It was great to watch that romance transition to so much more.

I've had the privilege to read a few books by Autumn Jones Lake. I love the Lost Kings MC books. It was great to see some of the back story. I would highly recommend reading this book then starting the series. So much is explained. Please check out this amazing book.

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would! The care and love that these 2 young people have for each other is something rare and wonderful. Roman, *sigh* he would definitely have made my young heart melt. I loved him but not in the way I love Wrath from another one of Autumn's books. I wanted to go back in time and be something this kid could rely on. So very sweet, kind, considerate and protective, everything we all wish our first and only loves could be. This is hands down one of my most favorite books to date. Thank you Autumn.
